The Word as Relationship

Scripture

  • "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." (Exodus 14:14)
  • "Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night." (Psalm 1:1--2)
  • "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." (John 1:1,14)
  • "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." (Ephesians 6:11)
  • "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." (Galatians 5:22--23)

Reflection

When we talk about the Word of God, we often think first of the Bible. And rightly so as it is God's Special Revelation, His gift of truth and guidance. God also reveals Himself through creation and stillness (General Revelation), reminding us that His Word is alive and all around us.

John 1 takes us even deeper: the Word is not ultimately a book, but a Person - Jesus Christ. This reframes everything. Scripture is not just information about God… it is an invitation into relationship with Him.

When Moses told Israel, "The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still" (Ex. 14:14), he was pointing to trust in God's presence, not just obedience to a text. Likewise, Psalm 1 reminds us that meditation on the Law isn't about legalistic study, it's about delighting in the God who gave it, savoring His nearness day and night.

But the enemy works against this relationship. The devil distracts us with noise, hurry, and lies, blocking us from hearing and being with the Word as we should. That's why Paul calls us to put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6) to resist the spiritual forces that keep us from intimacy with Christ.

And this relationship with the Word is not just for us. As the Holy Spirit produces fruit in us (Galatians 5), others get to see Christ alive through us. In a dark world, the fruit of the Spirit is how His light shines through His people. Our lives become a living testimony that the battle has already been won.

Application

  • Shift our mindset: See the Bible as a relational doorway, not just a textbook. Ask not just, "What do I learn?" but "Who do I meet in these words?"
  • Practice stillness: Create space for God's presence. Turn down the noise of the world to hear the Living Word.
  • Wear the armor: Be aware of the ways the world and the devil himself tries to block our relationship with Christ. Stand firm in truth, prayer, and faith.
  • Bear fruit: Let the Spirit shape our character so that others encounter and see Jesus in and through us.

Prayer

Jesus, Living Word, help me not to settle for knowing about You, but to know You. Teach me to be still and let You fight my battles. Clothe me in Your armor, and grow Your fruit in me so that others may see You shining through. Thank You that the victory is already Yours. Amen.
